Who molded you into the person you are today? Think back to high school or your first job: Did someone guide and support you when you faced difficult choices or challenges? Whether acknowledged or not, the difference makers in your life were your mentors.
From educational guidance to aiding the transition into adulthood, mentors provide positive outcomes for those whom they influence.
How Do I Get Involved?
If you are interested in getting involved, here are some ways you can make an impact:
- Become a Role Model – The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF) provides positive support systems and mentoring programs for youth across the Commonwealth. Dedicating a small amount of time toward becoming a mentor can make a difference in a child’s life.
- Discover Local Mentoring Programs – The Mass Mentoring search tool will help you find a mentoring opportunity near you.
Five Hallmarks of a Quality Mentoring Program
Mentors need guidance and support systems, too. When looking for a program to volunteer your time, make sure the organization follows these best practices to ensure quality mentoring:
- Carefully screens mentors with youth safety in mind;
- Matches mentors and mentees based on similar interests and backgrounds;
- Trains mentors with knowledge and skills needed to promote a good relationship;
- Is clear about expectations and responsibilities when recruiting mentors; and
- Provides continual support for the mentorship with advice and problem-solving techniques.
Mentors provide the invaluable gift of their time to a young person in need of guidance. Celebrate their contributions in your own life by thanking them and becoming a mentor yourself.
