President Barack Obama nominated Senator John Kerry to fill the role of Secretary of State following Hillary Clinton’s retirement, and Kerry accepted, leaving his seat vacant. The primary election to fill Senator Kerry’s seat in the U. S. Senate takes place on April 30th. In order to vote in the primary you must be registered by April 10th. Following party primaries, the special election will be held on June 25th.

Vote - Register
What is a primary?

A primary election helps to narrow down the candidates for each political party prior to the official election.

How do I register to vote?

Voter registration is available by mail, in person at any voter registration location, or at the RMV. See full registration information here. Individuals may only vote in the primary for the party they are registered for. If you wish to change your party affiliation, you may do so by the registration date of April 10.

Where do I vote?

To find your local polling place and election information use this tool from the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s office. Simply enter your home address to find your local polling place.

Can I still vote if I won’t be in the state on April 30th?

Yes. Massachusetts allows voters to vote by absentee ballot if they fill one or more of the following criteria:

  • Will be absent from their city or town on election day
  • Have a physical disability that prevents voting at the polling place
  • Cannot vote at the polls due to religious beliefs.

More on absentee voting can be found here.

What if I registered but I haven’t received any confirmation?

If you have NOT received confirmation of your voter status from your city or town election official within 2 or 3 weeks from the date you registered, please contact your local election office to verify your voting status.

Who is running?

The U. S. Senate candidates are:

Democratic Party:

Stephen F. Lynch

Edward J. Markey

Republican Party:

Gabriel E. Gomez

Michael J. Sullivan

Daniel B. Winslow
