Karyn Polito at the Children's Trust Steps of Hope Event 4.7.16This is a guest blog post from the Children’s Trust.

The Children’s Trust was created by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1988. Our mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect across the Bay State. Through decades of research, programs, and evaluation, we have learned that the most effective way to prevent child abuse and neglect is to partner with parents early — before families are in crisis and children are being hurt.

The Children’s Trust supports families with a number of programs and resources, including:

  • Healthy Families — A home-based coaching program that helps young, first-time parents create safe, stimulating environments for their children
  • Family Centers — Places where parents and children can go to meet other families, tap into community resources, learn new skills, and find support programs
  • One Tough Job — A website that gives parents information about raising children and helps them find community resources
  • Parenting Education and Support Programs — Group programs that help parents strengthen their caregiving knowledge and skills
  • Fatherhood Initiative — Training and activities that support fathers, their families, and the professionals who work with them

The importance of preventing child abuse can’t be overstated. Abuse and neglect cause “toxic stress” that stunts children’s brain development and has a long-term impact on their physical and mental health.

Learn more about parenting and preventing child abuse at the Children’s Trust website or on Facebook.
