You might be surprised, but the winter season is full of local, nutritious, and delicious food, and we at MassGrown are thrilled that Bay State farmers and producers are gearing up to sell a variety of local food at more than 40 winter farmers’ markets. During the winter, farmers’ markets set up shop indoors, creating energy-filled spaces that keep the cold away. While musical performers serenade market goers, you can shop for winter greens, root vegetables, fish, meat, chicken, eggs, cheese, maple syrup, wine, and baked goods.

Holiday Markets

Many farmers’ markets will also host special events where you’ll find a variety of ingredients for your holiday meals, as well as handcrafted items and decorations made by local artisans to complete your gift giving. While you can find a complete list of seasonal events on the MassGrown and Fresher calendar, here is a taste of what’s happening across Massachusetts:

Christmas Tree Farms

If you’re looking for some extra festive fun, find a Christmas tree farm near you. At many, you can cut your own. These farms not only provide seasonal jobs for a number of Massachusetts families — they help the environment, too. Studies show that just one acre of 8- to 12-year-old trees removes 500 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and contributes 1,000 pounds of oxygen each year.

Enjoy the season with fresh, local goods from farmers across Massachusetts. Share your favorite winter farmers’ market with us @MassGov or in the comments below.
