Massachusetts is home to a medley of beautiful reservoirs, rivers and bays. You may have even taken your share of walks or hikes along the waterfront to get a better look. But have you experienced the charming wonders of Massachusetts from the water?
Canoeing and kayaking are fun, relaxing ways to explore your surroundings from an alternate view this summer. For example, adventurers can survey metro Boston from one of five access locations along the Charles River; enjoy 175 acres of spring-fed lake along Hopkinton State Park; take in the rugged beauty of Middlesex Fells Reservation; or marvel at the spectacular wooded views from Benedict Pond along Beartown State Forest in Monterey.
It’s easy to find a great spot to drop in and paddle with over 60 parks and rental locations across the Commonwealth.
And no matter where you decide to explore, remember these tips before you start rowing:
- Protect your skin. The sun is strong these summer months, particularly when rays reflect off the water. Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher before boarding and tote along extra to reapply if you’re out for more than an hour. It’s also a good idea to bring sunglasses, a hat and a light long-sleeved shirt for extra protection.
- Drink water. It’s important to stay hydrated in the summer heat so be sure to bring along a water bottle.
- Wear a life vest. Even the strongest swimmers must wear a life vest on the water. Should your canoe tip, it will be much easier to recover without having to tread water on your own. And to best avoid capsizing, do not stand up in a canoe!
- Protect your devices. Should you decide to bring along a camera, phone or portable music player for your journey, protect your devices by placing them in sealable plastic sandwich bags.
- Bring a buddy. It’s always safer to set out with a canoe mate. Plus, you can point out interesting sights to one another you might miss on your own.
