Well, the weather is finally starting to get into the spring of things, and with (slightly) warmer temperatures comes outdoor fun! Massachusetts has plenty to offer someone looking to enjoy the great outdoors in springtime.

“Methinks that the moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow,” said Henry David Thoreau. See what he was talking about by exploring one of Massachusetts’s many hiking trails, which offer terrain for everyone from beginners to rugged adventurers. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be inspired to run off to Walden Pond as well!  You may prefer to experience nature at a faster pace. If so, check out one of the great running paths listed here. Exploring on two wheels is another option, and the Department of Conservation and Recreation offers many enjoyable bike paths for exercise and exploration.

After a day on the trails, you might want to relax with a local vintage… Did you know that there are more than 25 wineries in Massachusetts? Grab some friends (all over 21 of course) to tour a vineyard and taste the wines of the Bay State.

April vacation is another annual tradition, and with the kids out of school for a week, you may be searching for some family fun. Consider a “staycation” and get to know your community! Visit a local farm (some even will let you pet the animals) or check out this guide to April vacation from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism. And, if you really just need to get away for the weekend, why not explore the Berkshires or try some oysters on Martha’s Vineyard?

Massachusetts truly has something for everyone this spring and it doesn’t have to break the bank… Try one of these 50 great ideas under $50 for families and couples! And don’t forget to follow the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ blog, The Great Outdoors for weekly events highlighting the natural beauty of Massachusetts.
