If yomass in motion logou’re like me, and most other people, you celebrate food day each and every day. So, it’s natural to ask, “What’s the deal with Food Day?”

It’s not a reminder to eat (yours truly has never needed a reminder!), but a chance to appreciate our food, consider where it comes from, and to keep it safe, sustainable, and accessible and affordable for all.

The typical American diet contributes to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems, and treatment of which costs Americans more than $150 billion per year, according to Food Day. Yikes.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health created Mass in Motion to promote opportunities for healthy eating and active living wherever people live, learn, work, and play in the Commonwealth. Working with communities, schools, childcare centers, and businesses, we help make it easy for people to eat better and move more, so they can make better choices to feel healthy and live well.

Mass in Motion communities, and others, can make the healthy choice the easy choice by working on strategies that:
• Create incentives for grocery stores to locate in under-served neighborhoods and enable existing stores to carry healthy food
• Promote infrastructure improvements to make stores more accessible
• Require detailed menu labeling in restaurants
• Offer incentives for restaurants and stores to promote healthier options
• Encourage use of SNAP and WIC benefits at farmers’ markets
• Promote land-use policies/zoning regulations to expand and protect sites for community gardens and farmers’ markets
• Establish nutritional standards and guidelines for use at food pantries
• Require that drinking water be available in public areas and facilities
• Reduce access to and consumption of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods (fast foods), particularly near schools and playgrounds

The 27 Mass in Motion programs across the state (representing 60 cities and towns), keep the spirit of Food Day alive throughout the year, with leadership on issues vital to our health, including healthy eating, active living, and health communities.

Mass in Motion communities work with local government, schools, stores, restaurants, farmers’ markets, and other stakeholders to help make it easier to eat better and move more. Find out more about Mass in Motion here, or check back for future blogs on eating better and moving more.

Healthy Chelsea

Cooking Matters at the Store (shopping tours at Market Basket) – Friday, 10/24 and 10/31, 9 a.m.

Taste tests and demonstrations in Chelsea’s Public Schools – during the week of Oct. 20.

Some restaurants and bakeries in Chelsea will offer dishes and pastries free of trans fats. Each participant will have a “We are 100% Artificial Trans Fat Free” decal on its door, and will offer educational brochures.

Martha’s Vineyard

Swine & Dine Local Smoke Out – Friday, 10/31, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., $35.
Food (local pork), live music.

Grand Gala – Saturday, 11/1, 6:30 p.m., $125.
Six-course local pork dinner. Featuring: Kari Underly, a third-generation master butcher, author of The Art of Beef Cutting, Guest chefs, Jan Buhrman, Nathan Gould, Jamie Leeds and Kathleen Blake, will share recipes and discuss pork.
