The other night, my parents took me and my fiancé out to eat. My mom likes to keep the conversation light, and as usual, asked questions like “what was your favorite memory as a kid?” and “what would you rather have, a beach house or a pool?”
Then she asked another easy one, but my future-husband’s answer surprised me. She asked us what food we would choose if we could eat as much as we wanted without negative consequences. My parents both named obscure Armenian dishes, I said “cake” (naturally), and the outsider yelled out “watermelon!”
…Really? You get one free pass and you’re going with watermelon?
Not only was I surprised, I was embarrassed about giving the most fattening answer at the table. So I thought about it, pictured it, pretend-tasted it in my head…and yeah, I guess it’s not a bad choice.
But it didn’t end there for me. I kept thinking about that answer, and why I would probably never choose fruit as my favorite indulgence. Then, it hit me.
Since I was young, I’ve always attempted to diet. Foods like cake have always been “bad” foods that I tell myself I’m not supposed to eat. That, I think, is partly why I crave it so often.
On the other hand, I’m marrying someone who never diets. He eats what he wants, when he wants, and nothing is off limits. That said, he eats everything in moderation, which is what we’re all told is the best way to eat.
I also think that’s what allows him to really enjoy fruit. Its not something he HAS to eat, its something he WANTS to eat. Have you ever seen a 3 year old eat watermelon, blueberries or strawberries? They love it! And not because they’re supposed to, or because it will help them maintain their weight. It’s because they are sweet, juicy, delicious and fun to eat. I want to get back to craving fruit!
So, today I started by eating scrambled eggs, and a cup of red grapes for breakfast, and that added sweetness made this one of the most satisfying breakfasts I’ve had all month. I think I may be on my way. All we need now is a watermelon topper for our wedding cake.
