SafeStreets SmartTrips 2015Calling All Massachusetts High School Students! MassDOT announces the second annual Safe Streets Smart Trips Statewide High School Video Contest.

The contest serves as an initiative within the Massachusetts Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) to promote safe walking, bicycling, and driving behaviors within the Commonwealth. The contest began last year to encourage high school students to take the lead in showcasing an understanding of roadway safety across travel modes in an effort to decrease pedestrian and bicyclist injuries and fatalities – a trend that has not followed the Commonwealth’s downward shift in traffic-related incidents over the past few years.

The video contest is open to all Massachusetts high school students and features two entry categories – a freshman/sophomore category and a junior/senior category. Students are asked to speak to one or both of the following statistics: one pedestrian is killed every five days and one bicyclist is killed every month; two pedestrians are hospitalized every day and one bicyclist is hospitalized every three days. A grand prize and runner-up will be selected in each category.

Contest rules and guidelines will be sent to high school principals and can also be found at

Winners will be chosen in October, 2015 and announced at MassDOT’s annual active transportation conference, Moving Together. The grand prize winners will receive an iPad, a $300 cash prize, and a sponsor prize pack.

The contest is designed to raise awareness of each traveler’s behavior within the transportation system. In order to prevent accidents on our roadways, all roadway users must exercise care and caution for other travelers. The contest will also draw on the benefits of healthy and active transportation options. Last year, MassDOT received nearly 50 videos from communities across the Commonwealth.
