Safe Routes to School Westminster iWalk 2014

MassDOT’s Safe Routes to School Program is pleased to announce that the Commonwealth landed in third place for the highest International Walk to School Day (iWalk) registration rates in the country!

iWalk, a day when elementary and middle school students walk to school across the world, continued to break records in 2013, with 4,447 schools registered across the U.S. Every state had at least one registered event, marking the 12th consecutive Walk to School Day with 100% participation across the country! In Massachusetts, 250 schools added to the overall success throughout the country with 42,000 elementary and middle school students participating.

iWalk began in 1997 with a single school, and continues to steadily grow each year, with new events making up 44% of this year’s count. Now, thousands of schools across America and more than 40 countries celebrate walking to school every October.

International Walk to School Day promotes healthy and safe walking and bicycling to school, but also helps to create a sense of community and school spirit. The Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program helped to organize events across the state, from the early planning stages to attending the events and cheering on the students as they walked to school. The events keep growing every year! This year, new events made up 54% of all total events.

Schools throughout Massachusetts and across the country hold International Walk to School Day events for several reasons. Whether schools are looking to increase physical activity among students, support their Safe Routes to School program, foster pedestrian safety, or raise concern for traffic congestion and pollution of the environment, holding a Walk to School event will raise awareness and help to promote healthy and active lifestyles.

Massachusetts Safe Routes to School outreach coordinators are busy planning International Walk to School Day for 2014 – already getting ready to break 2013’s records! International Walk to School Day will take place on October 8th, 2014.
