Alford Street Bridge Opening, August 1, 2014MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola today joined state and local officials to announce the Route 99 Alford Street Bridge over the Mystic River connecting Charleston and Everett is now open and operating at full capacity.

The $56.1 million project included rehabilitation of the structural, mechanical & electrical systems for the moveable span, replacement of the power and communication cables, new bridge signal equipment, pavement markings and signage, approach span structural repairs, approach roadway reconstruction and all incidental work.

The reconstructed bridge provides two travel lanes in both directions, with bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides.

Reconstruction of the bridge required working despite heavy use by motor vehicles and an active marine channel for vessels traversing the Mystic River. The project contractor is SPS New England.
