New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge, March 2014MassDOT has closed the Route 6, New Bedford-Fairhaven swing bridge to vehicles through Saturday, April 12, 6:00pm, in order to perform necessary structural steel repairs to the bridge’s floor beams.

“We are taking this time ahead of the busy tourist season to complete these repairs that will extend the life of this structure,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola. “MassDOT is committed to completing the job as quickly as possible.”

DePaola also noted that local businesses will remain open during repairs.

The swing bridge will be set in the open position to allow marine vessels to transit the area in accordance with Federal Law and US Coast Guard requirements. The following detour will be posted for drivers:

  • Route 6 Eastbound traffic in New Bedford is being detoured up Route 18 Northbound and onto I-195 Eastbound at (Exit 15) to Exit 18 and onto Route 240 Southbound.

Weather conditions may impact the planned two-week closure.
