Grand Central StationBy Kate Fichter,  South Station Expansion Project Manager

As MassDOT prepares Boston South Station for expansion, we invite you to consider other landmark railway stations from around the world.  The South Station Expansion website now features a slideshow of images of some of the greatest train stations – both old and new – to inspire us all as we consider what Boston South Station can be.  The images demonstrate the many ways in which train stations can be destinations in their own right as well as vital transportation hubs.

Many of the featured stations were built at the end of the 19th century, as was South Station. In addition to continuing to play vital transportation functions, they now include shopping centers, hotels, gardens, public amenities, and opportunities for entertainment, as well as many other uses.

Visit http://www.massdot.state.ma.us/Portals/25/Docs/trainStationsOfTheWorld.pdf and learn about stations in New York, Toronto, Washington, DC, Chicago, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Denver, Berlin, London, Zurich, Antwerp, Malmö, Madrid, Strasbourg, Tokyo, Kanazawa, and Melbourne.

Once you’ve viewed the slideshow, consider how some of these ideas could be incorporated into a new South Station and share your ideas with us!  Please feel free to contact Katherine Fichter at katherine.fichter@state.ma.us and be sure to sign up http://www.massdot.state.ma.us/southstationexpansion/Notification.aspx for project updates.
