MassHighway Commissioner Luisa Paiewonsky will celebrate Massachusetts Walk to School Day on Wednesday May 6 by participating in a “walking school bus” with Mayor Joseph C. Sullivan and the students of Donald Ross Elementary School in Braintree. Ross School Principal Donna Bonarrigo will bring Commissioner Paiewonsky and Mayor Sullivan to meet the walking school bus on Elm Street; from there, the group will walk to the Ross School to meet all the other walkers. This will be one of hundreds of events at schools across that Commonwealth in which students walk and bicycle to school as part of the Commonwealth’s Safe Routes to School program.
Safe Routes to School is a critical part of the Commonwealth’s transportation and health strategies. The Executive Office of Transportation (EOT) partners with 217 elementary and middle schools that are attended by almost 100,000 students in 88 communities all across the Commonwealth to deliver the Safe Routes to School program. Walking and bicycling safely to school is a healthy choice for students and good for the environment.
