Baseball bench with bat ball and gloveOn September 9, 2015 Boston Mayor Walsh signed into law an ordinance which prohibits smokeless tobacco products at professional, school, and amateur sporting event venues.

Docket #1273 to amend the City of Boston Ordinances by adding Chapter VII, Section 7-4.15 was filed with the Office of the City Clerk on August 10, 2015 and was passed by the Boston City Council on September 2, 2015.

“Smokeless tobacco refers to any product that contains cut, ground, powdered or leaf tobacco and is intended to be placed in the oral or nasal cavity, including, but not limited to, snuff, chewing tobacco, dipping tobacco, dissolvable tobacco products and snus.”

Signs will be posted at the entrances as well as in locker rooms and press boxes.  Event site managers will be primarily responsible for maintaining compliance with the ordinance which takes effect on April 1, 2016.  Any person who violates the ordinance may be fined $250 per offense.
