Hand holding a colored pencil coloring in shapesRemember when you were a kid? I do, and I loved to color inside (and outside) the lines in my coloring books! I’d get lost in the playful world of Garfield, outer space, and tropical rain forests.

Coloring books for adults have ballooned in popularity, and for good reason. Local book stores carry books with amazing art by professional artists – proof how important, and popular, coloring is. You can also create your own drawings and bring them to life by coloring them in.

While reading, music, and sports have plenty of health benefits, coloring has the unique ability to engage your fine motor skills while training the brain to focus. Coloring offers the additional benefit of mindfulness, or being in the moment. Coloring is calming, as moving your hand in a rhythmic fashion becomes a form of meditation. As a result, coloring releases tension and reduces stress and anxiety. Coloring also offers the opportunity to create a work of art before your very eyes. Now that’s powerful!

Coloring provides crucial time away from screens and technology, which lets your brain rest and reset. Some people have even said that coloring helps manage their pain, as well as grief.

Feel like a kid again by engaging in an activity that encourages playfulness and reminds you that it’s possible to return to simpler times. Childhood comforts plus adult creativity equals a mind at peace. Color by yourself, or with others. If you have kids, you’ll be teaching them a fun and easy way to relax.

So grab a coloring book, some colored pencils, crayons, or paint, and see what takes shape!
