2015 NEWBURYPORT H S TEAM-page-0 The 2015 Real World Design Challenge Massachusetts State Champion, Newburyport High School, on Sunday received the 2015 National Judges Award during the Challenge national competition.

Newburyport’s “Jet Engineers” student team is one of two Judge’s Award recipients for 2015.  The Judges Award is given to teams showing unique efforts, performance, or dynamics that merit recognition.  Newburyport won the Judge’s Award for the overall quality of their work.

The Real World Design Challenge is an annual competition that provides high school students, grades 9-12, the opportunity to work on real world engineering challenges in a team environment. Students use professional engineering software to develop their solutions and generate presentations that convincingly demonstrate the value of their solutions. The RWDC provides students with opportunities to apply the lessons of the classroom to the technical problems that are being faced in the workplace.

The 2015 RWDC National challenge focused on unmanned systems and precision agriculture through the design and implementation of an Unmanned Areal Systems (UAS) to support precision agriculture, specifically the targeted and efficient application of pesticide to control local crop predation.

The MassDOT Aeronautics Division has been a sponsor and participating state in this Aeronautical/STEM program since it’s inception in 2009.

Congratulations to the Newburyport Jet Engineers and all the national winners!
