I-95 Add A Lane Project MapMassDOT’s I-95/Route 128 Add-a-Lane Project final phase continues to move forward during the month of July.

Throughout the week of July 6, MassDOT contractor Barletta Heavy Division will continue construction operations with work performed during both the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM and third shift of 7:00PM to 5:00AM.

During the overnight third shift, construction activities will be located on both Route 9 and Route 128 mainline and require the closure of two highway lanes, which is prohibited during regular working hours. Work on the mainline will include the installation of drainage in the median south of Kendrick Street and from the Railroad Bridge to Central Avenue, and the drainage component for a temporary cross over lane.

During regular daytime hours, work will take place on the Kendrick Street Bridge, Central Avenue Bridge, and the Highland Avenue Bridge. At the Kendrick Street Bridge, work will include installation of walls, striping the pier caps, and forming, reinforcing, and pouring the west abutment wall. At Highland Avenue, work will include pouring of the west abutment walls and the forming and reinforcing the east abutment walls.

At Route 9, the work will focus on the removal of the existing guardrails and islands at Route 9 and the removal of the Route 9 median barrier. The work will also entail building an access road along the W1 Ramp, building the W1/W5 shoulder to widen ramps, and building the W1 and W5 ramps. Ramp W1 connects Route 9 westbound to Route 128/I-95 northbound and ramp W5 connects Route 9 eastbound to Route 128/I-95 northbound.

This project is the sixth and final contract to provide an additional travel lane and shoulder toward the median on I-95 from approximately Route 24 in Randolph to Route 9 in Wellesley. This widening includes restoring the breakdown lanes for their intended use. This sixth contract is a 3.8-mile segment of I-95 from just north of the Needham Branch railroad bridge in Needham to about 5,000 feet north of Route 9 in Wellesley.
