MassDOT Urges Public to Plan Ahead for Busy Memorial Day Weekend Travel 

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is urging the public to plan ahead if traveling Memorial Day Weekend, and to expect an increased volume of travelers this year.  In addition, travelers should note that Massachusetts COVID-19 prevention health protocols remain in place during the weekend holiday, with most restrictions lifting as of Saturday, May 29.  For information: https://www.mass.gov/news/baker-polito-administration-to-lift-covid-restrictions-may-29-state-to-meet-vaccination-goal-by-beginning-of-june

Due to Monday, May 31, being the Memorial Day holiday, all Commonwealth of Massachusetts offices are closed, including Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) customer service locations. More than 40 RMV transactions can be done online: www.mass.gov/RMV.  In addition, residents who are members of AAA, can make an appointment at a AAA location for some Registry transactions. All drivers are reminded to check their motor vehicle inspection sticker on the windshield before leaving home.  Drivers with vehicles with inspection stickers that were expiring in March 2021 and April 2021 that received an inspection extension, must have their vehicles inspected by end of day May 31, 2021.

Meanwhile, the MBTA has released the following information:

  • On Monday, May 31, all subway, buses, and trackless trolley will operate on a Sunday schedule.
  • The Commuter Rail will operate on a weekend schedule. Customers should note that there is currently no weekend service on the Fitchburg, Franklin, Greenbush, Haverhill, Kingston, and Lowell Lines, and as such, these lines will not operate on Memorial Day. The Needham Line also continues to be suspended.
  • All ferry service schedule information can be found at mbta.com
  • The RIDE trips must be booked 1-3 days in advance.
  • In compliance with federal and state regulations, MBTA customers are reminded that face coverings must be worn while onboard MBTA vehicles, in stations and facilities, on platforms and bus stops, and anywhere within the MBTA system for all riders, including those who have been fully vaccinated. This includes bus stops and all outdoor platforms for the Commuter Rail, subway, and trolley systems.

On the roadways, all scheduled road work around the Memorial Day Weekend is postponed.  The I-93 Boston-Quincy High Occupancy (HOV) lane will deploy early for the holiday weekend, opening at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, and opening at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 28.  The HOV lane will not be deployed on Monday, May 31.

At Boston Logan International Airport, passenger and employee safety is Massport’s top priority. According to the CDC and TSA, masks continue to be required at the airport, while onboard an aircraft, as well as while using public and private transportation systems to and from Logan. Massport has also enhanced cleaning protocols at all properties following public health guidelines.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation reminds the public that current COVID-19 restrictions, including the face covering advisory, remain in place until May 29, 2021. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that it will replace the I-90 eastbound bridge over Woodland Road in Southborough from 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 23 to 5:00 a.m. on Monday, July 26. Eastbound traffic will be shifted through a median crossover to the westbound side of I-90. Travel will be reduced to two lanes in each direction and opposing traffic separated by a barrier.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that all lanes on the Roosevelt Circle eastbound bridge are open to traffic as of 11:10 a.m. Friday, July 23rd. There will be some lane width restrictions in place until permanent repairs can be completed which will take several months. Additionally, all lanes on I-93 southbound reopened for travel as of 4:36 p.m. Thursday night, following the completion of temporary repairs to the Roosevelt Circle Overpass which was damaged by an over height truck on Monday afternoon, July 19. Drivers should expect slowdowns within Roosevelt Circle due to the narrowed lane widths in the area of Route 28, the Fellsway and on and off ramps for I-93.

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is announcing that applications for the 2021 Low Number Plate Lottery are now being accepted online at Mass.Gov/RMV using the Online Service Center. Applicants must apply by August 27, 2021, and, if selected for a low number plate, will be notified after the virtual drawing takes place on September 8, 2021.
