Statewide Exit Renumbering Work Update

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing the status of new milepost-based signs at various locations on Interstate 93 northbound and southbound between Boston and Methuen. The sign installation operations are continuing nightly during overnight hours from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following morning. The work is expected to be completed in approximately four weeks.

Work to install milepost-based signs on I-93 northbound and southbound, between old exit 13 to exit 27 (Southeast Expressway between Dorchester and the Tip O’Neill Tunnel), are scheduled to take place through Thursday, May 6, as follows:

  • Sign installation work was conducted on the northbound lanes of the Tip O’Neill Tunnel overnight, Tuesday, May 4.  Temporary northbound lane closures will be in place.
  • Sign installation work will be conducted on the southbound lanes of the Tip O’Neill Tunnel overnight tonight, Wednesday, May 5.  Temporary southbound lane closures will be in place.
  • Sign installation work will be conducted on I-93 southbound, from the Tip O’Neill Tunnel to Dorchester, on Thursday, May 6.

Sign installation operations on I-93 northbound and southbound, between old exit 28 to exit 48 (between Boston/Somerville and Methuen), are anticipated to begin on Monday, May 10.

Exit numbers 1 through 12 will remain the same exit numbers as they are already consistent with the existing mile markers.

All work is weather dependent and construction dates may be adjusted as conditions warrant.

MassDOT’s Statewide Exit Renumbering Project is converting all exit numbers on roadways, per Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requirements.  Interstates and major roadways in Massachusetts previously utilized a sequential exit numbering method.
