Whittier Bridge new span opens to I-95SB traffic

Whittier Bridge new span opens to I-95SB traffic

MassDOT will begin demolishing the old Whittier Bridge on Monday, December 14. The work will be completed in phases over the next three months.

The contractor will begin by removing the bridge deck asphalt and barrier, followed by the structural steel, and finally the bridge abutments. The contractor will work two shifts, 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM to 5:00 AM, Mondays through Saturdays, weather permitting.

The contractor expects to begin removing the piers in early February and complete demolition in March 2016. After the old bridge is demolished, the new span will be constructed in its place and southbound traffic will be shifted to it in late summer or early fall 2017.

In addition to daytime lane closures, MassDOT will implement the following overnight lane closures from 8:00 PM on Tuesday, December 15, to 6:00 AM on Wednesday, December 16:

• One left lane on I-95 North from Route 113 to the Whittier Bridge
• One right lane on I-95 South from Route 110 to the Pine Hill Road/Ferry Road Bridge

These closures are required for the contractor to remove overhead utility lines over the highway.

MassDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize delays. Those traveling through the area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution.
