Haverhill- Bradford Rail Trail, October 9, 2015MassDOT Rail & Transit Division Administrator Astrid Glynn joined elected officials and supporters today in Haverhill to celebrate the Bradford Rail Trail groundbreaking.

When completed, the 3,300 foot long Rail Trail will be located between the Basilere Bridge, the Comeau Bridge near South Elm Street and the MBTA commuter rail station in Bradford.

“It is exciting to celebrate this project milestone for the Bradford Rail Trail,” said MassDOT Rail & Transit Division Administrator Astrid Glynn. “By working to build the rail trail, MassDOT is showing our commitment to provide recreational transportation alternatives, and support healthy living initiatives in the Commonwealth.

This “rail to trail” multiuse-path is part of the planned 2.5-mile long Haverhill Riverwalk that will be open to multi-modal non-motorized uses such as cycling, jogging, walking and rollerblading.

“MassDOT has been working towards promoting a comprehensive environmental responsibility to incorporate sustainability into all of its activities, from strategic planning to project design and construction to system operation,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Thomas J. Tinlin. “It is projects like the Bradford Rail Trail that are great examples of that commitment.”

“I am excited to kick-off the enhancements to our rail trail. This trail will give residents a place to walk or bike along the Merrimack River,” said Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini. “ I want to thank Representative Dempsey and our legislative delegation for their support of this trail. This is the first piece of the trail, as we expect to expand the rail trail in the future.”

Work begins this month on the $2.2 million project with contractor, MDR Construction. Completion is scheduled for spring 2017.
