Full Road Closure on East Main Street/Bridge Street between River Road and Wharf Lane

Rocks Village Bridge will remain closed to all vehicle and marine traffic until further notice due to an over height bridge strike

HAVERHILL/WEST NEWBURY – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is announcing that the section of East Main Street/Bridge Street between River Road in West Newbury and Wharf Lane in Haverhill will remain closed due to an over height truck striking the Rocks Village Bridge over the Merrimack River.  MassDOT has conducted an initial inspection of the portion of the bridge where the impact occurred and documented significant damage to several key structural components.  The bridge will remain fully closed to vehicular and marine traffic pending completion of a comprehensive inspection, including areas on the underside of the structure, to evaluate and confirm the full extent of the damage.  The bridge will not reopen throughout the duration of the design and implementation of a corrective action plan.

The bridge is normally closed to marine traffic through Memorial Day, so no immediate marine impacts are expected.

More details will be announced regarding the traffic impacts of this incident and long-term detours when they are known.

MassDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize delays.

Those traveling through the area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution.
